"LESS IS MORE" and More...

I realized that I fell prey to the concept of 'retired' when someone had suggested that we had retired the farm operation, when mainly the idea was that we no longer RAISED lambs and calves for sale off the farm. We STILL farm with LESS sheep and cattle on the property. All are retired in that we no longer breed either ewes or cows to lamb or calve. MORE of our time and efforts are put towards 'giving back' to the land in a restorative way the pasture and water resources we utilized in raising lambs and calves here. The best pasture lands are fenced away from riparian buffers and forested habitats and utilized to graze retired ewes and cows, no longer needed for breeding, but with years left of their lives. It is good to give them a retirement home, while maintaining quality in pasture grass diversity and seasonal growth. Stream bed restoration and protection along with water troughs being established in fields to pump water from springs and existing wells on the farm keep our livestock away from ponds and streams. There is LESS work and MORE time for us to spend on furthering our efforts to CONSERVE AND PROTECT the BEST PASTURES of the farm for future use, while improving habitat for wildlife and restoring wood lands where shaly ground is less than ideal for crops or pasture. And, as mentioned in previous posts, MORE and MORE of what we do is aimed towards protecting the Headwaters Tributary on our farm where Lost River begins its journey upriver north to the Cacapon and the North Fork of the Potomac and into the Potomac and into the Chesapeake Bay. Keeping this tributary clean and protected is where our hearts live!
